Department Overview

The Department of Kurdish Language was established in the academic year 2003–2004 and includes (Language, Literature, Education). The subjects taught over the four-year program are aligned with the primary school curriculum of the Ministry of Education.

After studying within the framework of our department's curriculum within four years, students will obtain a bachelor's degree in Kurdish language and literature, which includes a wide range of subjects including: phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, poetic texts Literature, contemporary literature, theoretical and practical criticism, general psychology, developmental psychology, educational psychology, measurement and evaluation, teaching methods, viewing and practice.

The Kurdish Language Department is dedicated to preparing future Kurdish language teachers who can teach Kurdish language and literature specialties at the basic schools’ level. It also trains students through educational and psychological issues to better prepare for the teaching profession, in line with the principles of the Bologna process, so that students have the skills and competencies needed to progress in both academic and teaching participation.

The program of our department is different and unique compared to the Kurdish departments in other colleges, which has made our graduates show a good level in the private sector every year and there is a lot of demand for our graduates.

Mission

The Department of Kurdish Language is as important as any other department of language and literature in universities around the world. The purpose of the Kurdish Language Department is to establish an academic knowledge about language and literature in general and Kurdish language and literature in particular. Because these are an important pillar of human knowledge. In general, people learn language to learn how language is formed and used. In addition, they will become familiar with the levels of human language and the variety and differences of languages. Similarly, they will get an insight into with the concept of language importance for human communication with the world and the environment. Similarly, literature is studied to develop academic principles. Because literature is one of the basic foundations of human knowledge. Literature is a record of people's feelings, which makes a reader think, live and talk about those moments.

Vision

Our mission is to become a global department in scientific research and teaching. Our department should also be able to serve the development process and be worthy of the process of life and scientific and cultural progress with other similar departments. The aim of our department is to provide good teaching and produce advanced research in order to prepare high scientific capacity in terms of quantity and quality, in a way that meets the needs of society in scientific progress and filling the job market. Our goal is also to produce innovative educators who have a positive impact on the education system and society. Through continuous improvement and adaptation to global educational trends. Provide a comprehensive education in line with the principles of the Bologna Process, ensuring that students acquire the skills and competencies necessary for their academic careers.

Graduates at the Kurdish language department will be able to:

  • In addition to paying attention to Kurdish language subjects (Language, Literature), we also pay great attention to (teaching methods and psychology) to expand the minds of our students to educate an innovative generation.

The department maintains an active partnership with the Ministry of Education (MoE), enabling students to gain classroom experience through teaching internships in public schools.

In addition to that, students participate in a long school-based observation program, where students visit and learn from experienced teachers for the duration of a semester.

Degree Program Overview

The Department of Kurdish Language awards a bachelor's degree in Kurdish language and literature to its graduates. The bachelor's degree consists of four years of study, each year consisting of two academic seasons, namely autumn and spring. Subjects at this level are generally divided into:

  • Basic subjects, examples of language and literature subjects. These subjects provide graduates with expertise.  
  • Educational subjects. These subjects teach students the skills of dealing and communicating.  
  • General subjects, examples of academic skills, computer skills and English.

Postgraduate studies

  • This level of education includes master's and doctoral studies, which are dedicated to solving problems of Kurdish language and literature, studying Kurdish language and discussing literary issues.
    • First: Master level 120 ECTS
    • Master's degree studies are completed in two years. In the first year, there are two semesters and 60 ECTS are obtained. For each semester (30 ECTS), several important subjects are taught in each language and literature specialty.
    • In the second year, the master's student writes a scientific paper which is obtained 60 ECTS.

    • Second: Doctoral Level (180 ECTS)  
    • The PhD level consists of a semester of study earned (30 ECTS), with the writing of a PhD thesis earned (150 ECTS). This course lasts for 3-4 years. In this research, the researcher goes deeply into linguistic and literary problems and gains detailed expertise.

  • Graduates from the Department of Kurdish Language at Salahaddin University-Erbil will achieve the following learning outcomes upon successful completion of the Kurdish Language programs:
    1. Comprehensive Knowledge Demonstrate extensive understanding of core Linguistics concepts. In the field of linguistics, language, its linguistic world and its science are discussed extensively; Students at this stage are widely informed about language and its secrets. including Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, and Pragmatic.  
    2. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Apply critical thinking skills and scientific reasoning to design experiments, collect and analyze data, and interpret findings. Graduates will be capable of Language, comprehension, structure and expression problems.  
    3. thical and Professional Conduct Upholding ethical standards and integrity in scientific and linguistic research and professional activities. Graduates understand the principles of language and literature and apply them responsibly.  
    4. Effective Communication Effectively communicate scientific information, findings, and concepts to diverse audiences through verbal presentations, scientific writing, and visual data representation. This includes writing research reports and presenting findings in professional settings.  
    5. Lifelong Learning and Adaptability Engage in lifelong learning to stay current with advances in emerging technologies. Graduates will demonstrate adaptability to new scientific methods and concepts. This is to familiarize students with books and their contents during their visits to libraries. Studying this subject is useful for students when writing essays, reports and research.

    By achieving these outcomes, graduates of the Kurdish Language Department will be well prepared to address language barriers, advance scientific knowledge, and serve their communities effectively.

    Admissions

    The Department of Kurdish Language offers two types of study options for prospective students, ensuring accessibility and flexibility based on individual circumstances:

    1. Zankoline (Government-Funded) Study
         
      • Description: This option provides free tuition for students who meet the eligibility criteria and are accepted through the general centralized admission system, known as "Zankoline."  
      • Eligibility:  
           
        • Applicants must meet the academic requirements as set by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.  
        • Selection is competitive and based on high school scores, particularly in literary subjects such as Kurdish, Arabic, and History.
         
      • Benefits:  
           
        • Exemption from tuition fees.  
        • Access to full university services and facilities, including labs, libraries, and extracurricular activities.  
        • Opportunity to benefit from scholarships and other government-sponsored initiatives.
       
    2. Parallel Study (Self-Funded)  
         
      • Description: This option allows students who do not secure a Zankoline seat to pursue their studies by paying a tuition fee.  
      • Tuition Fee: 1,000,000IQD per year.  
      • Eligibility:
      • Students must meet the minimum academic requirements for admission to the Kurdish Language department.  
      • This option offers an opportunity for students who did not secure a government-funded seat to study while paying the tuition fee.  
      • Benefits:  
      • Access to the same high-quality education, resources, and facilities as Zankoline students.  
      • Students can pursue their academic goals without being limited by centralized admission quotas, ensuring they receive the same academic and professional opportunities.

      • Completion of high school with a focus on the Kurdish Language track, specifically in subjects such as Kurdish, Arabic, History, and Education.  
      • Minimum GPA as determined by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

        1. Apply through the centralized admission system for Zankoline.  
        2. Submit required documents, including high school transcripts, national ID, and other certificates as per the application guidelines.
         
      • Parallel Study (Self-Funded)  
           
        1. Apply directly to the Department of Kurdish Language for parallel study.  
        2. Submit required documents, including high school transcripts, identification, and relevant certificates, along with the tuition fee payment details.
         

    The Department of Kurdish Language has produced a large number of graduates in recent years, most of whom have gone on to work in teaching, educational support and scientific fields in both the public and private sectors.
